Alternative processing: Cyanotypes

A Brief History

John Herschel who was an astronomer invented the process is 1842. The paper that were used in those day for contact printing was coated with iron salts, and were then fixed using hyposulphite. In 1843 Ana Atkins became the first to use cyanotypes for a photographically illustrated book. ("Cyanotype History – John Herschel’S Invention")

What do I Need?

  • A negative

  • Watercolour paper (at least 200mg)

  • Cyanotype chemicals

  • Brush

  • Contact print frame (homemade)

  • Sunlight or a UV light source

  • Dark room

  • Safety lights

The Process in a nut shell

  • Mix chemicals.

  • Prepare canvas with chemicals and brush.

  • Print in available light source

  • Wash and dry
